Cleaning Out Your Garage for the New Year

January 4, 2017

Many people use the start of the new year as the time to get organized and clean out their space, whether it’s the entire house or just your room. So we are here to argue that the garage should be on the list of spaces you clean up and organize this year, for safety reasons and simply for the sake of using the space more efficiently. And to help make this as easy as possible for you, we have put together a list of ways to do this.

For starters, most people use the garage as storage, for the car and for all the random items that don’t want to be kept in the home, and some even eventually remove the car and take up the rest of the space with even more stuff. There are plenty of reasons why you should store the car in the garage (theft, weather, preventing damage, giving your car a longer life) so all of the following tips will be ways to organize all of the stuff in your garage in a way that leaves enough space for the car to park as well.

Our first tip is the most important one: get everything off the floor. The garage has 3 walls and and an entire ceiling of space to hold everything you keep in the garage and you should use as much of it as you can. Install shelves on the walls and along the ceiling, add hooks for hanging everything that can be hung, and invest in some large storage bins. As you begin to sort through everything, organize them into marked bins, like winter stuff, sports goods, tools and spare parts, toys, etc. Once everything is sorted, get it off the ground and onto a shelf and do your best to keep things organized this way all year round.

As you begin to look through everything you are storing in the garage, keep an eye for items that shouldn’t be kept in there in the first place. Things like pet food, gas, and paper products should not be kept in the garage, some for safety reasons and others because they invite rodents into the garage and provide the perfect reasons for them to never leave. Do your research about the worst things to keep in the garage and store them elsewhere in the house, which frees up even more necessary space and will prevent you having to use some form of pest control in the future.

Your overhead space is perfect for big items that you might not fit on the wall. People often store their fishing rods, surfing boards, or hang their bikes from ceiling racks. Your ceiling space should be used as much as possible, especially for deep storage items, things that you only need once or twice a year. This is just yet another way to get things off the ground, which give you more space and will make it easier to keep the floor clean.

And speaking of cleaning, once you have sorted and organized everything you need, and don’t forget to throw out all things you don’t, finish the job by giving the garage a thorough clean. Dirty, dusty, and filled to the brim garages invite all sorts of unwanted creatures, from bugs to mice, so cleaning is a good way to prevent this. Give the floor a good wash, dust and clear out dirt, and maybe even invest some time in giving parts of the garage a new coat of paint, which will give the space the finished look of organized and clean.

When your home is organized and free of clutter, it works better and it just feels better. Your garage space is no different. It should reflect the cleanliness of the rest of the home so don’t exclude it from renovations, organization, and spring cleanings in the future. We hope that this list helped you get your things sorted and in order and for any garage and garage door needs, don’t hesitate to call us, 24/7!
